Perfection Learning English I

Perfection Learning appreciates the time the Texas Resource Review team has dedicated to providing qualitative reviews of adopted Texas instructional material. We hope these reviews provide valuable information to Texas teachers and districts in evaluating which instructional materials are most appropriate for their classrooms.

When developing instructional materials, Perfection Learning strives to deliver solutions that are:

  1. Easy to Use – Streamlined structure and content keeps activities focused and goal-oriented.
  2. Focused – Clear purpose for each lesson helps students take control of their learning.
  3. Flexible – You choose how to implement: integrate into existing curriculum, refresh unit studies, develop specific skills, or update your core curriculum.

The Texas Resource Review Team evaluated Perfection Learning’s Texas Connections English I and English II programs. The review of our programs was overwhelmingly positive with just a few items noted as shortcomings. While we don’t refute the comments made, we feel the few areas identified as “issues” by the review committee reflect the flexibility of how the Texas Connections program can be implemented.

Specifically, the review notes that the materials provide opportunities to build academic vocabulary throughout the year; however, an explicit year-long plan for building and applying academic vocabulary within and across texts is not provided. The Texas Connections program is not intended to be a comprehensive vocabulary program, yet it does provide effective and extensive vocabulary development support. The program allows districts and teachers to continue to use existing vocabulary programs or any of the high-quality vocabulary programs offered by Perfection Learning to work in tandem with the Texas Connections program.

The review also states that the Texas Connections program does not include a clearly defined plan to support independent reading…and support students in self-selecting texts and reading independently for a sustained period-of-time. The Texas Connections program was designed to naturally build each students’ ability to delve deeply into a text and extract meaning and textual evidence. The intent is that students can take ownership of their learning and apply these skills when reading independently. As the report notes, we do provide a list of suggested additional reading materials that connect to the theme of each chapter and allow students to authentically practice the skills they have learned through independent texts.

Lastly, the report notes that while we provide many implementation supports including a TEKS-aligned scope and sequence and a detailed pacing guide for classroom teachers, we do not provide supports to help administrators support teachers in program implementation. Unfortunately, the review committee was not provided full access to our newly available interactive digital editions which include extensive data reporting capabilities to support administrators including:

  • Standards-based and skills-based performance reports • Participation goals and participation rates (including teacher evaluations)
  • Class-level and building-level rollup data (administrative view)
  • Exception reporting for both students and classes based on target expectations
